Benson

Staff bee. The only one.

Rotund where it counts, unhurried always. He showed up at the garage in Aptos, read the clover, checked the swell, and never left. The honey is his work. The rest of us just carry the jars.

World’s most relaxed employee.

The biography

Short. Round. Well-traveled, sort of.

Everything we know about him, which is mostly things we watched him do from the garage.

01

The arrival

Two hives went in behind the garage, a half mile from the water. One of them produced a bee with unusually good judgment. He found the coastal scrub before we finished naming the fields, and he has been working the same route ever since — clover at first light, scrub by noon, home before the fog rolls thick.

02

The build

Nearly spherical. Round head, big friendly eyes, stubby legs, two-tone honey gold with warm dark stripes, outlined in warm charcoal and nothing else. Not slim, not wasp-waisted, not realistic, and definitely not wearing sunglasses. Mid-century in the way that matters: every line earns its place.

03

The surf

There is a teal board leaning against the hive shed. Nobody knows when it got there. He rides it the way he works — committed, calm, slightly faster than he looks. Carving hard into a turn is his default expression, and the good waves are exactly where he said they’d be.

“He knows where the good waves are.” — Eric, who works for him

04

The terms

No salary. No benefits. All clover. He has never once asked for a raise, a day off, or a second opinion on the bloom calendar. HR is a jar lid he can land on.

The portfolio

The pose library.

Six official poses. Here are the ones he actually gets used for.

Action & energy content. The one he prefers.

Mid-air aerial (laughing)

Joy & celebration. Usually when the cooler restocks.

Pose 04 / 06

Hang-five on a glassy wave

Calm & “we’re here” content. Also his Monday.

Pose 03 / 06
Benson riding a teal surfboard across the sand, wings up

Board under one arm

Market days. Look for the teal, not the table.

Pose 01 / 06

The anthem

He has a theme song now.

Filmed on the cooler, scored by whatever the garage radio was on. Thirty seconds of a rotund bee surfing a wave of honey, jar held high, lid long gone. It is not subtle. Neither is he.

Press play. He won’t.
